Band 28

Adatdansen Irian

Cassette Philips ferro C-60 in a Philips box. The languages are various Papua languages, a bit of Bahasa and some Dutch. On side A the subject is traditional dances from Nimboran recorded in October and/or November 1969. They are recordings of an event with an MC using amplification and the voices of the audience. The audio is often overloaded. There are disturbances from the wind and moving the microphone and the songs often begin and end abruptly. Side B is recorded in the Wissel Lakes and in Angguruk in the Yalimo region, with songs and church service, mouth harp music from East New Guinea and it ends with music and an announcement in Bahasa by a radio station.

Jemat GKI koor

Cassette Maxell UD 60 in a Maxell box. Christian choir from the Jemat GKI Pengharapan Jayapura Irian Jaya. Probably self-recorded by them and then sent to Mrs Mans-Tavenier, On the cover is the signature of Bjan Warwe dated 22-7-89. Only part of side A is used for the recording and there is quite some hiss and low rumble. One can also hear car noises in the background.

Opening Centraal Ziekenhuis

Cassette BASF ferro extra I 90 in a Sony box, no cover. On side A It has a Dutch spoken report of the opening of the Central Hospital in Hollandia in Dutch New Guinea on 21 May 1959 with speeches by governor Plateel, songs by the workers, medals being awarded, a speech by Reverend Rumainum in Dutch and Bahasa, a speech by Bishop Stavermans, the hospital director de Vries, presents for Plateel and song by children. It has been copied from a tape. Who the presenter and the recordist are, and what happened to the original tape is unknown.

Microcassette

It is a Sony MC-60 minicassette, speed 1,2 cm/sec. It is an interview made by Aldert Schipper, who wrote for the Trouw newspaper with Reverend Erari, secretary general of the Protestant church of Irian Jaya GKI, on 17 October 1986. The article in Trouw is based on the interview that was published on 20 October 1986. The interview was made during the first ecumenical workgroup meeting of  for Irian Jaya in Oegstgeest. The interview starts in Dutch but Erari switches to English later. Side A is the beginning of the interview and Side B the continuation.

Adatdansen 30 April 1962

The tape is in a red Philips EL 3953 LP box on a Philips 7.4 cm spool and the speed is 4.75 cm/sec. The recording was made by the Reverend A.M. Middag. It is a recording of adat dances on 30 April 1962, festivities for the Dutch queen during that period near the Sentani lake, and a recording of a mission festivity in Jaboy also in April 1962. Side A, the mission festivity, starts with a flute and drum orchestra with the sounds of the public, talking people, a crying baby, at 6’49 choir songs with wind disturbance, at 10’11 a speech in Bahasa with sound of insects and birds, 15’07 communal singing, 18’44 flute and drum orchestra, 20’32 communal singing. Side B starts with an announcement saying that it is Queen’s day 1962 and that one can hear songs from the villages around the lake; 0’13 tifa songs with talking. From time to time it is distorted and the volume goes up and down, 14’54 a signal flute comes in, 15’10 a Dutch voice says it is 1:30 at night; more tifa songs follow from time to time with signal flute.

Tahiti

The tape is in a red Philips EL 3953 LP box on a Philips 7.4 cm spool and the speed is 4.75 cm/sec. The recording was made by the Reverend A.M. Middag. It is a recording from Tahiti, a choir of the school boys of the Protestant mission and a military brass band.

N.G. onde

The tape is in a blue dotted Philips DP8 box on a Philips 7.4 cm spool and the speed is 4.75 cm/sec. It is a performance at a school with songs, a speech in Dutch and Bahasa, some prayers and more songs. Who made the recordings and where is not clear, but Hollandia is mentioned.

The tape is in a brown envelope and on a brandless 12.7 cm spool, speed 9.5 cm/sec. Who recorded it is unknown, but it is dated 6-2-1955. It is a recording of the 100-year celebration of the Protestant church in New Guinea. Side A starts with a choir song, Dari Ombak Besar, followed by the opening speech, a choir song, a speech about the history and value of the mission for New Guinea, and then an organ tune. Side B starts with country and western music, followed by a speech on how the mission brought skills in agriculture, trade, schools, medicine and so on.

The tape is in a brown envelope and on a brandless 12.7 cm spool, speed 9.5 cm/sec. Who recorded it is unknown, but it is dated 6-2-1955.  It is a recording of the 100-year celebration of the Protestant church in New Guinea. Side A starts with organ, then choir songs, 4’16 speech in Bahasa, at the end there is an excerpt of piano music in the speed 19 cm/sec. Side B starts with an excerpt of a song in Dutch, 0’03 continuation of the speech in Bahasa, choir song, a voice saying break, end.

The tape is in a grey plastic BASF box, on an AGFA 10.7 cm spool, speed 9,5 cm/sec. The tape is a recording from the radio of modern classical music. On Side B Stockhausen’s Kontakte is mentioned and later follows a documentary about the ‘stampconcerten’ in the Shaffy theatre in Amsterdam with an interview with Theo Loevendie.
As this tape is not West Papua related one cannot listen to it.

Zr Glastra

The tape is in a red dotted plastic Philips LP 15 longplay box and on a Philips 14.7 cm spool, speed 9.5 cm/sec. It is a recording of an interview with Sister Glastra who worked as a nurse and midwife in New Guinea from 1930 onwards. On side A she talks mainly about her early period from 1930 to 1950; on side B she talks about the later period, after the Second World War.

Höweler

The tape is in a red Philips EL 3914 LP box and on a Philips 17.8 cm spool, speed 9.5 cm/sec and 1.8 cm/sec. It has recordings of interviews, radio lectures about Islam in South Asia, and medical lessons for nurses. The medical lessons are on channel A 1 and B1, at the low speed of 1.8 cm/sec and the radio lectures on B1 at the speed of 9.5 cm/sec. On A 2 there is first a radio lecture by Reverend Gramberg about Buddhism in Sri Lanka, followed at 31’04 by G.E. Meuleman about the new theology, 49’12 G. Huls, Reverend director, about women as Reverend, and at 66’03 an interview with the missionary medical doctor Höweler who arrived in Serui in February 1936. The interview is continued on side B 2. The relevant interview has been taken out separately.
The rest of the tape cannot be listened to.

It is a CD Double Diamond Digital in a 2-CD jewel box together with band 166. It was recorded by H. v.d. Heide, probably originally on tape, and it is a recording of the adat dances by the Mai Brat from Tehit in the Bird head area. Jongenskoor JJVS Teminabuan

It is a CD Double Diamond Digital in a 2-CD jewel box together with band 163. It was recorded by H. v.d. Heide, probably originally on tape, and it is a recording of the boys’ choir from the Boys continuation school of Teminabuan. The tape recorder had a malfunction and all songs are distorted by it.

It is on a Philips CD-R80 with a purple slim jewel case. It is a rather uncritical interview with S. Smit who worked as a missionary medical doctor for the Cama for six years from 1958. The interview was recorded on 5 June 2007.

ZWO dienst tbv Papoeaschool in Biak

It is a Philips CD-R80 in a jewel box with a sleeve giving the content of the CD and the programme booklet of the church service. It is a recording of a Protestant church service of 13-10-2002 in Uitgeest-Akersloot with Reverend M. Luijk in association with the “Verenigd Internationaal Samenwerken” foundation, and with songs by the  Rumajauw family, dedicated to fundraising for a school in Biak.

Bavinck

It is a Sony HF 60 tape without a box. It is a recording of a radio broadcast with on side A a talk of a group of people about the church and the duties and experience of the members. The mission is mentioned but it is a general talk without any direct link with West Papua. On the B side is a talk by P.J. Visser on the book about the Reverend and Professor J.H. Bavinck and his missionary theology published in 1997, and at 7’48 a talk by a group of people about the family and women having children at a higher age. The programmes were broadcast on Radio 5 probably by the EO.
