Wings of Mercy
Sondisko 99 177 DE, A

Deel 1, The first part of a single 45 rpm with a few songs and speeches of the Franciscan Cabaret. The single was issued as a fund-raising campaign for the Franciscan flying service in New Guinea. The Franciscan Cabaret was founded specifically in 1958 for this campaign and performed in the holidays of 1958 in hospitals, retirement centres, monasteries and alike institutions 66 times in 25 days. This record was the result of their programme. The address of Wings of Mercy was in Amstelveen and in the Franciscan monastery in Nieuwe Niedorp. It starts with a song on the mission in New Guinea, on 0’45 it continues with a short speech and song on his lamentation plank. On 4’48 it continues with a speech and song about his life story, particularly his school days before his priest study.

Wings of Mercy

On 3’35 an introduction and song about grandmother who took her lifelong care of the children but was not so good treated by them when she got old. On 5’05 a song about the goat of the aunt. On 6’47 a song about singing summer and winter old songs for the cosiness.

The Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv

The Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv exists since 1900 and has a collection of approximately 30.000 wax cylinders with 350 collections of ethnomusicological recordings of around the globe. It was first part of the Institute of psychology of the Friederich Wilhelm University, then of the Berlin Conservatory and it became part of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin in the 1930’s. From 1944 90 % of the collection was taken by the Soviet Union and in 1991 returned to the Ethnological Museum. The wax rolls in as far as they have been digitised can be listened to in the Ethnological Museum of Berlin. They contain from West Papua:

The institute of Beeld en Geluid started as the audio-visual archive of the Dutch public radio and television stations. In time it has been merged with the film archive of the government information service, the Dutch film and science foundation, and recently with the Dutch Press Museum. It also acquired the audio archive of the Tropical Museum.

Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde

The Museum voor Wereldkulturen is a fusion of the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum for Ethnology in Leiden and the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal.

The Jaap Kunst sound collection

It is a collection that was started by Jaap Kunst in the Tropical Museum and after his death was largely sold to the University of Amsterdam in 1963. Except for the wax rolls that remained in the Tropenmuseum, which were later transferred to the Institute for Sound and Vision, together with the sound collection of original recordings built up in the Tropical Museum since then. Sjoerd Jaarsma

Jan van Baal en Markus Kasiepo

Sjoerd Jaarsma recorded a number of interviews with former Dutch civil servants, missionaries and scientists who worked in West Papua during the Dutch period. He used the interviews for his thesis “waarneming en interpretatie: vergaring en gebruik van etnografische informatie in Nederlands Nieuw Guinea (1950-1962)”, ISOR, Utrecht, 1990.  He worked for Pace from 2000-2012.

Freerk Kamma en F.J.S. Rumainum

PKN (Protestantse Kerk Nederland)

These are tapes and cassettes in the audio collection of the Protestant Church of the Netherlands, a fusion of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church since 2004. The original audio carriers are in the Utrecht Archive but were digitized before they were moved from their archive in the service centre of the PKN to the Utrecht Archive. These West Papua related tapes were made as documentaries, archive sound files, or as the sound files for the slide shows on the mission and work for schools and societies made by the predecessors of the PKN. Often there is more than one tape of the same title. The one with the best sound quality has been chosen.

Oegstgeest Freerk Kamma

Freerk Kamma

These are the tapes which were formerly kept in the archive of the Mission School in Oegstgeest. In 1999 the school and institute was closed and moved to Utrecht. The archive had already been moved earlier, first temporarily to Leusden and then further to Utrecht, where they became part of the PKN archive. Because of a flooding in the archive of the PKN or because of the move, the original tapes were lost. The same also happened  with the DAT-tapes copies that were made of it, but fortunately the cassette copies survived. They were digitized by PACE before the cassettes were moved together with the rest of the audio archive to the PKN collections in the Utrecht Archives.
