Dema

Dema, Music of the Maind Anim, is a CD published by Pan Records, no. 4018 in 2008 in their series, Royal Tropical Institute: the music collection. It is a selection of the recordings which Jan Verschueren made in 1962  among the Marind Anim. The CD contains 42 tracks of which 40 were of the 1962 recordings and two tracks from the wax cylinder recordings Jan Verschueren made in 1933, just two years after he arrived in the area. The wax cylinder recordings were made on request of Jaap Kunst. In 1962, after more than thirty years in the area as a Catholic priest, Verschueren had become a fluent speaker of Marind Anim and was also initiated into their secret societies. He made these recordings to try to capture the songs which belonged to the rituals and ceremonies which had almost disappeared but that people could still remember. In a correspondence with Jan van Baal, he commented extensively on these songs and their social circumstances but also on other parts of the book that Jan van Baal was writing on the Marind Anim. In fact, Jan van Baal would have liked to mentioned him as a co-author, but Jan Verschueren was too modest for it. The book Dema was published in 1966. The original tapes are kept in the Jaap Kunst collection. Fred Gales wrote the liner notes, oversaw the digitization of the tapes and did an extensive study of the recordings and all notes and correspondence relevant to them.  Fred Gales made the selection in collaboration with the producer Rein Spoorman. The booklet is illustrated with historical pictures of the Marind Anim.
