PKN (Protestantse Kerk Nederland)
These are tapes and cassettes in the audio collection of the Protestant Church of the Netherlands, a fusion of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church since 2004. The original audio carriers are in the Utrecht Archive but were digitized before they were moved from their archive in the service centre of the PKN to the Utrecht Archive. These West Papua related tapes were made as documentaries, archive sound files, or as the sound files for the slide shows on the mission and work for schools and societies made by the predecessors of the PKN. Often there is more than one tape of the same title. The one with the best sound quality has been chosen.

Jalimo, land over de bergen
A tape in a self-made cardboard box reinforced with blue cloth tape and with a sticker of Audio-Visie of the Dutch mission council in Baarn, with on the front side a sticker with the typed title, length and speed and a written number A61 A. The spool is 12.7 cm and the speed is 9.5 cm/sec. There is also an accompanying text book. It is the story of a journey by plane to Jalimo, in the Central Mountains, by Reverend Zöllner and the beginning and advances of the mission in Jalimo since 1961. The tape was made fairly soon after Indonesia’s occupation of West Papua, somewhere between 1963 and 1968 when the regional capital city was called Sukarnopura.

The tape is in a red black striped Gevasonor box on a 10 cm spool with the speed of 9.5 cm/sec. It is the sound track of the movie “Dropped in the stone age”. The tape starts with the sound of a sinus wave, at the time usual to indicate the volume level of the sound. The sound quality is low with a lot of hiss and cracks. The music excerpts used are often taken from the recordings of Freerk Kamma and not related to the story or images of the movie. For example, one can listen to bamboo cither music from the Mai Brat on 6’00 which comes from the Bird Heads area. The story is about the mission in the Central Mountains of West Papua. The way of life in these mountains is called the stone age. The tape was made fairly soon after Indonesia’s occupation of West Papua, somewhere between 1963 and 1968 when the regional capital city was called Sukarnopura.

The tape is in a self-made cardboard box reinforced with black cloth tape and on the front side is written Jalimo II C. The spool is 12.7 cm and the speed is 9.5 cm/sec. There is also an accompanying text book. It tells the story how the mission was started in Jalimo, in the remote Central Mountains, by the missionaries Reverend S. Zöllner and Doctor W. Vriend. The tape was made fairly soon after Indonesia’s occupation of West Papua, somewhere between 1963 and 1968 when the regional capital city was called Sukarnopura.

The tape is in a red Agfa PE 31 box with a spool of 10.6 cm and a speed of 19 cm/sec. It is a tape with choir singing from Ambon in the Moluccans, Manokwari in West Papua and Solo in Indonesia. Side A starts with an announcement in Dutch followed by choir songs from the students of the Theological Institute of the Moluccan Protestant Church. The recordings are partly overdriven in the loud passages. At 14’05 is the announcement of the Maranatha Choir of Manokwari in West Papua. Side B is Band 199.

The tape is in a red BASF LGS 26 box with a spool of 10.2 cm and speed of 19 cm/sec. On the tape are sounds during the church service in Angguruk, Jalimo. There is loose leaflet in the box which gives a short overview of the contents of the tape. It starts with music recorded by Freerk Kamma among the Mai Brat, a very different region, then follow radio messages, the sound of an airplane, at 3’06 follows a percussion number, Western, no relation with West Papua at all, then at 5’07 the sound of an airplane, Jali talking, at 7’17 a solo song by a Jali man, at 7’45 angklung and guitar instrumental tune, no relationship with West Papua at all, 11’47 Papua tifa song Biak style with distortion, not from Jalimo, 13’57 solo song, 15’10 church bell, 15’50 community singing with the Reverend clearly leading.

The tape is in a red BASF LGS 26 box with a spool of 10.2 cm and speed of 9.5 cm/sec. It is a sile sound show in two parts, part 1 and part 2. Part 2 is Band 202. The change of the slides is indicated by a bell sound. It is the story of the mission in the Baliem valley according to N. van der Stoep. It is the story of a journey from Hollandia to the new hospital near the town to a Protestant boys continuation school near lake Sentani. Then to the airfield to take an airplane with the Missionary Aviation Fellowship to Tiom in the Baliem valley. Then we get a description of the life of the inhabitants and some mouth harp tunes. Then festivities, songs and dances and finally a present for the wife of Van de Stoep, a small pig. There is a text book. The tape was made after 1959 and 1962. The original tapes and pictures of Van der Stoep are in the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden.

The tape is in a red BASF LGS 26 box with a spool of 10.2 cm and speed of 9.5 cm/sec. It is a slide sound show in two parts, part 1 and part 2. Part 1 is Band 201. The change of the slides is indicated by a bell sound. It is the story of the mission in the Baliem valley according to N. van der Stoep. It is the story of a journey from Hollandia to Tiom in the Baliem valley on which they took 15 boys from the coast with them to be further educated as teachers and evangelisers and to help the missionaries. First the students and the missionaries had to learn the Baliem language. Further, the students received wind instruments and an organ and after one and a half year they could they play them. The missionaries introduced sheep, western pigs, ducks, potatoes and also games and gymnastics through their students. Then one day there was the breaking of the weapons. No more war and the next day a great festivity and then the journey back by plane. The tape was made after 1959 and 1962.

Teminabuan
It is on a probably a 60-minute Cro2 cassette. It is the story of the Women’s Training Centre of Teminabuan and it was published by the ‘Nederlands Christen Vrouwen Bond’, Dutch Christian Women’s Union in Amersfoort in collaboration with the Centre for Mission and World Diaconate of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands in Leusden, and the Council for Mission of the Dutch Reformed Church in Oegstgeest. There is a text book. The story gives a short overview of the situation and migrations into West Papua, the history of the mission, the role of women in life and the church, the types of education offered by church organisations and the specific situation in Teminabuan.

The tape is in a green orchestra picture Scotch 150 box on a brandless spool, speed 9.5 cm/sec. Side A starts with a recording of a radio broadcast, a musical journey through New Guinea. It could be Van Wengen, wo worked for the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden and who made a number of radio broadcasts, or J.C. Anceaux, who made the original recordings that are presented as examples. The recording is cut off several times as at 1’31 after the second example, at 1’43 comments cut off, then as an example of an arousal song, the sereme, at 2’35 comments cut of, the beginning if next example also shortended, 2’47 Nimboran comments cut off and the beginning of comments about kangaroos shortened, cut off at 3’02 and then continued, Dow Mamum comments before a song on the return of a headhunting expedition: nowadays part of the koreri songs; an example; comments on this musical journey through New Guinea we have not yet made, cut off 5’40; at 5’42 a fall in comment on the garden, the role of spirits in getting a good harvest with a music example; 6’40 traditional songs up to this point and now a song that has changed under influence of Christianity. Before, it was a song for the souls or spirits of the dead people that had to go to Meos Befondi but nowadays the lyrics have changed in that the souls have to be brought there because of Christ. 7’55 an ending announcement that ’these were sounds of the fringe of our kingdom’. 8’06 another example, 8’24 ‘what you heard before is a song of the N’dani boys, you can hear how one leads and the other follow. Side B starts and ends with music from Africa but from 27’40 to 35’45 it has recordings from West Papua. That has been separated as a file. It begins with sounds of nature, mainly birds and the environment; at 5’37 there is a recording of a group song with a tifa of a low quality, 6’52 choir song.
